"Back in 2011, we took our first look at A Better World, a Facebook game from ToonUps that encourages users to perform good deeds both in-game and in the real world to create a better world for us all. The game is still going strong on Facebook, with over 2.5 million players (to date) performing almost 24 million good deeds."

In A Better World, users create an avatar, and are given a home to decorate using gold they earn while playing. This gold is earned by completing good deeds, like helping friends or family members, helping with the chores, being “green” in everyday life (say, by recycling), and more. The game supports these “on your honor” tasks, and also allows users to complete deeds within the game itself.

I love playing all sorts of games, whether they’re video games, board games, yard games…really, anything I get to be competitive in, I’m interested.  But what if by just playing a game I was also contributing to a real world cause?  ToonUps is a local Pennsylvania digital entertainment company that has a goal of making the world a better place through their games and they asked me to review their free Facebook game “A Better World”.

A Better World takes the Facebook game to the next level by rewarding players for good deeds done both in the game and in real life.  You create a virtual version of yourself and then can start exploring different parts of the game.  Proud of helping a friend in need?   Share it in the “Department of Do Good”.  Feeling grateful for your job and family?  Head to the “Gratitude Grotto” and let other players know.  Want to write a letter to a child in the hospital?  A Better World is partnered with CURE and set up a “Positive Post” for sending get well notes to actual CURE kids.

Every so often a company comes along which not only offers a useful product or service to its customers but a desire to fulfill a wonderful goal as well. In this particular case, the company is ToonUps and the product is A Better World. Headquartered in Wayne, Pennsylvania, ToonUps created A Better World, which is a unique social enterprise which brings together fun and good deeds, in one easy-to-use Facebook game.

As a leader in the Cause Gaming® space, A Better World provides a way for Facebook users to do good deeds easily and effectively while having fun at the same time. With this “Do Good to Look Good” game, players gain rewards in the form of “Do-Good Gold” when they perform certain good deeds. These deeds can include easily completed actions such as sending get well wishes or expressing gratitude to others. When good deeds are fulfilled, players will then be able to use the “Do-Good Gold” rewards to decorate their virtual dream house or take care of adorable virtual pets.

When the creators of the Facebook game "A Better World" eclipsed their goal of six million good deeds, instead of holding a celebration for their employees or giving them a bonus, they funded life-saving surgeries for three children in Uganda who were suffering from hydrocephalus, which is a buildup of fluid inside the skull that leads to brain swelling.

These three children now have the chance to live long and healthy lives thanks to Ray, MarySue and Gregory Hansell, the family behind the ToonUps Company. The husband, wife and son combination began in January 2000 as a digital entertainment company whose mission is to create online games and apps to brighten the world.
